product satisfaction

I work for a company that has allowed us to take medical aid on partial subsidy. Needless to say the plan is a low medical aid plan which has plenty limitations. I have cancelled that membership with my employer and want to take up a new medical aid on my own. They have denied me that and said that they can only do so in December. What they are saying is that me and my child have to be without medical aid from now till December. I don't see why this is viewed as an upgrade as its not the same plan I was previously on that I'm reviewing but rather a totally new and different one. What is the negative impact on their side for allowing me to take up the new membership? Should I go to another medical aid rather? I'm financially stable NOW to take up the new medical aid. I'm very frustrated as I have a 4 year old who does not announce when she gets sick only to find that Discovery want me to wait to get my medical aid as its somehow suits them. HOW? They will never take the blame when I'm death bed because I did not get the care I needed medically.

Hello ANMbhele02,

Thank you for your comment.

We've confirmed that you have spoken to our Executive Office who has provided feedback on the concerns you raised.

Plan upgrades are allowed during Year End Revision which occurs in October each year and the pan change is made effective from January the following year. Member's are informed of the Year End Revision through email communication from the Scheme or their employers. When plan changes are requested and the plan type offers more benefits than the previous plan, this is seen as an upgrade and is not allowed during the policy year. This rule is put in place as a risk measure to ensure the overall sustainability of the Scheme and its members. The current level of care you opted for does offer cover for unlimited in-hospital treatment with access to out-patient treatment up to pre-determined limits.

I trust you understand our position on this matter and we're sorry we could not provide you with a more positive outcome.

Kind regards
Bruce
