Please stay away from Discovery
I canceled my Discovery Health insurance in March 2015 with effect of 30 April 2015. I phoned Discovery to ask what happens to my medical savings should I cancel, to which they indicated that it will be forfeited. I asked whether or not I should spend the amount, and they confirmed.

On the 25th of May an amount of 1040.40 + 185 was deducted from my leave payout from my employer relating to 'Discovery and Vitality Arrears'. I phoned and my ex-employer indicated the amounts were submitted by Discovery and I need to contact them. I contacted them and they indicated that they dont know anything about it and cant even see anything on their system. Further they indicated that I owe them R2560 for 'medical savings over spending', yet they cant provide an indication as to why the arrears amounts were taken off my account. Wow. Interesting.

Guess I wont be going with Discovery with my new employer. Hello Momentum!

I'd like to suggest that you stay away as well.
Thank you for your comment.
I have investigated your query and confirmed that the Medical Savings Account (MSA) is a fixed amount that Discovery Health gives you at the beginning of the year for day-to-day medical expenses. You pay this amount back to us in 12 equal monthly instalments but, if necessary, you are free to use the whole amount at the beginning of the year to pay for valid medical expenses. The 12 instalments form part of your monthly contribution.
If you leave the Discovery Health Medical Scheme part-way through the year, we calculate how much of the MSA you have used and how much you have contributed to it. If you have used more from the account than what you have paid into the account, then you will need to pay the difference to us.
I tried contacting you however, you were not available to take my call. I emailed you the details of how this was calculated.
Please feel free to contact us should you require any further assistance.
