Paying for Discovery Vitality but Still Being Penalised for Exercising? Serious Concerns Around Transparency and Fairness

I’ve reached the point where I genuinely feel misled by the Discovery Vitality programme.

I pay monthly for a rewards system that claims to encourage and reward healthy living, yet when you actually exercise consistently, the system appears completely inconsistent and impossible to rely on.

I recently compared two workouts:

Workout 1: • 1 hour workout • Lower overall activity • Fewer steps • Lower speed • Lower peak heart rate Result: 200 Vitality points

Workout 2: • Longer workout • Faster pace • Over 10,000 steps • Higher peak heart rate Result: Only 100 Vitality points

When I queried this, Discovery’s response was essentially that their system is automatically deemed correct unless the customer can somehow prove otherwise themselves.

So as paying members, we are expected to: • Pay substantial monthly fees • Exercise consistently • Hit difficult weekly goals • Trust a scoring system that lacks transparency • Accept inconsistent outcomes without meaningful review

What makes this worse is that even after escalating formally and providing detailed evidence, the responses received feel scripted and dismissive rather than genuinely investigative.

This is no longer just about missing points. It’s about: • Transparency • Fairness • Consumer value • Accountability • And whether customers are truly receiving what is marketed to them

A programme designed around healthy living should not leave paying members feeling frustrated, ignored, and manipulated by unclear algorithms and hidden thresholds.

I am now requesting: • A formal management review • Full transparency on how points are actually calculated • A proper investigation into inconsistent allocations • And consideration of reimbur*****t for a programme that has not delivered the value reasonably expected

I would appreciate a proper response from Discovery management rather than another automated explanation.

Discovery, I do not earn as much as other people. My medical aid eats up most of my salary. Vitality is a separate amount. I cannot afford fancy gyms after that. Call me now or all hell will be unleashed.

2 weeks of complete silence from Discovery. For a company that floods the public with polished advertising about excellence and customer care, the reality is embarrassing. Once there is an actual problem, customers are ignored like they do not exist.
South Africa, take this as a serious warning before partnering with or recommending Discovery. Paying high premiums only to be met with incompetence, arrogance, and zero communication is unacceptable. This level of disregard towards paying members is exactly why public trust in large corporates keeps collapsing.
The lack of response is now so ridiculous that it feels deliberate. If this is how Discovery handles complaints publicly, one can only imagine how many customers are suffering quietly behind the scenes.
At this stage I will continue escalating this matter everywhere possible until somebody competent finally decides to do their job.

Three weeks on and I am still receiving the same generic response: "We are investigating and will contact you soon."
To date, nobody has contacted me, nobody has provided a meaningful update, and none of my questions have been answered.
I have spent over 30 minutes trying to get through to a consultant who can actually assist, yet I am getting nowhere. At this point it genuinely feels as though I am being ignored.

What concerns me most is that Discovery seems able to respond publicly on HelloPeter, but cannot provide any substantive feedback to the paying member who raised the complaint.

This matter is no longer simply about Vitality points. It is about customer service, transparency, accountability, and whether Discovery is honoring the value proposition that members are paying for every month.
I am requesting that Discovery provide a proper update within the next 30 minutes, including:
• The status of the investigation
• The expected date of completion
• Whether my concerns regarding the Vitality points allocation have been independently reviewed
• Whether reimbur*****t of my Vitality fees is being considered given the lack of resolution

Three weeks is more than enough time to provide meaningful feedback. Continuing to repeat the same generic message is not a resolution.

I await your urgent response.

Update on my complaint:
This matter was originally raised with Discovery on 25 April 2026 regarding an inconsistency in Vitality points allocation between two comparable workouts. After receiving no substantive resolution despite multiple follow-ups, the issue was escalated on HelloPeter on 15 May 2026.
As there has still been no meaningful response addressing the specific questions raised, I have now formally escalated the matter to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) for independent review.
All relevant correspondence, reference numbers, and supporting evidence have been submitted as part of the complaint.
I will update this thread once the CGSO process has progressed.

I have read the response and, unfortunately, it appears to simply repeat the question I originally raised rather than provide an actual resolution or address my concerns.

I specifically requested either that the payments be reversed or that a proper explanation be provided as to why this cannot be done. Neither of these points has been addressed.

At this stage, I do not consider this matter resolved. I will therefore proceed with escalating it to the Ombudsman for further review. Should this still not be properly addressed, I will consider taking the matter further.

I am not prepared to leave this unresolved and expect a meaningful response rather than a restatement of my original query.

Guess your company cannot read what I wrote. I said, I do not accept your response. See below:
