Ongoing fights with Discovery

I am writing to express my deep frustration and disappointment with the way Discovery Health has handled my family’s medical coverage, particularly for my two children. Despite my regular premium payments, the lack of flexibility and support has been nothing short of a slap in the face to a parent simply trying to secure adequate care for their children.

My Son’s Rare Medical Condition My youngest son has a rare medical condition identifiable only through genetic testing, which we underwent at great cost. Based on the results, we were referred to the only pediatric endocrinologist in the northern suburbs of the Western Cape. However, due to the limitations of my plan:

His condition is not recognized, despite the medical necessity. The treating doctor and hospital are not covered. After a prolonged battle and intervention from the medical board, they reluctantly agreed to cover his medication. I still had to fight to get coverage for the hospital and the doctor. They kept insisting I take my son to one of the doctors and hospitals on my plan. However, after contacting all the pediatricians at the hospital, none were willing to take the case, as they were not trained to manage his condition. Eventually, I received approval for the hospital. Yet, I am still forced to fight for even partial coverage of the specialist's fees.

The process has been exhausting, emotionally draining, and disrespectful to a loyal client.

Emergency Incident With My Other Son In another instance, I had to rush my eldest son to the nearest hospital due to what appeared to be a seizure. However, since this facility was not part of the approved network, none of the costs were covered.

This rigid policy begs the question: if something critical happens to either of my children en route to an "approved" hospital, where do I stand as a parent? It is unacceptable that in emergencies—when every second matters—parents are forced to prioritize network compliance over their child’s immediate medical needs.

Unequal Treatment Based on Plan Tier It has become painfully evident that lower-tier plans are treated as secondary in importance compared to higher-tier plans. This inequity is both ********* and counter to the promises Discovery makes in its marketing as the “best” healthcare provider.

To families like mine, it feels as though we are less valued, with our concerns dismissed or minimized. Being on a lower-tier plan, we try our utmost best to adhere to the required doctors and hospitals. However, there are situations where assistance outside the network is necessary. I am just a parent, not a doctor, and in emergencies, my primary concern is the health and well-being of my children.
