Non-Disclosure of amounts payable
I recently switched from another medical aid to Discovery. The process of signing up took longer than expected, as there were always issues with my paperwork, but that aside, I finally got my membership card in mid-November. Having received my card, I contacted Jenna to confirm debit order dates and amounts so I could ensure the correct amount was in my account on the right day. She confirmed that debit order of R949 would run on the 10th of every month, starting yesterday, 10 December. I noticed that no payment went off yesterday, so this morning I phoned Discovery ***) and spoke to a consultant who informed me that I actually owed closer to R3000 and that Discovery had tried to debit my account on 1 December but there were insufficient funds. She said I owed premiums for October, November and December. At no point in any discussions with anyone was I informed of this. Apparently I was covered before I had even signed up. This is a failure to disclose what I willed be charged, which is in contravention of the Consumer Protection Act. I then asked for an email detailing what I owed and why, and was told I would have to wait 3-5 working days. FOR AN EMAIL?!
