No regard for health
I e-mailed the Chronic Illness Benefit box on the 13th September, asking if I could have my iron infusion treatments covered as a prescribed benefit. I was asked for an ICD10 code, which I provided. I in turn, received the Prescribed Benefits application and from that, the approval with the auth code. I printed the document and went to my doctor on the same day (22 September 2017) with document in hand. I proceeded with the treatment, and a follow up test on the 29th, all based on the fact that I received approval and medical aid would be covering under my prescribed benefits. Upon realizing that the treatments were not covered, I called in on Monday 2 October and was told by the consultant at Discovery that she would be calling me back at 2pm, upon confirming with the services department. Needless to say, I'm sitting here typing this complaint and still haven't heard anything. I received an sms from the doctor's rooms informing me that medical aid has now refused to cover any of my blood tests as well as the infusion.
My question. Am I basically being told that my being iron deficient isn't important and that, not having the funds to pay for treatment, (which cost me approx R500 each time I see the doctor (infusions and blood tests) matters not to my medical aid provider? I am now left in a situation where I have to cancel my medical aid because I gain nothing from it. I am low in iron, constantly fatigued, with each day that passes, my iron keeps getting lower, and still have to stress over having to pay for a medical aid account that does nothing for me and paying outstanding bills that are still piling on because one doesn't just wake up one morning, cured of a nutritional deficiency. I understand that an iron deficiency doesn't mean loss of life but surely, being an important component of the blood, the lack of iron should be considered life threatening?
