No Payment in an Emergency

<p>My understanding was that if I was ever in an emergency situation and admitted to an emergency unit, and because I have medical aid, my expenses will be covered?<br />I was recently injured and had to be taken to the CLOSEST emergency unit which was the Milnerton Medi-clinic. I needed immediate attention and in order to assess my injuries I was sent for an x ray. I had two x rays that evening and had to pay over R900 on the spot from my credit card because my medical savings account was depleted. I was also taken into an emergency room where I was given a drug -some form of anesthetic to knock me out. I later received a bill for R1972 for HOSPITAL ADMISSION as the statement claims. I have now received a bill from the surgeon who was called out to assist - R1700.</p> <p>I am currently paying over R2000 a month for Discovery and am now forced to pay additional medical expenses, which are piling up. I now need to cover expenses of an orthopedic surgeon. What exactly am I paying medical aid for? If not for hospital cover in emergency situations, then what is the point of a medical aid in emergencies?</p> <p>Based on the outline of your plan comparison, it states that you are covered in emergencies - but I am not? This is very misleading! Discovery responded to my complaint to say that the medical hospital was not approved out of their pre-approved list and that because I was admitted to casualty - it does not count? I also asked for an alternative plan to better suit my needs, and received no feedback.</p> <p>The medical expenses I am incurring are outrageous and I am seriously considering using a different service provider.</p>
