Medical aids or service providers, who is to blame for excessive charges?

Here is something I have had before on different medical aids that I wish someone would explain to me. Historical when utilizing medical services, one would notice that you pay more than you would than if you where a cash client. The story was always sold with the statement that it is to “subsidize the poor” which was of course hogwash. Over the last decade I have noticed something else. Now recently I did some tests. After the tests I enquired what the cost was and I was told just over R 2000. On the medical aid the claim was submitted for over R 3000. Now lately when you enquire about this the practice or pharmacy will tell you that “This is the rate the medical aid pays”. Here is my question, if a service costs R 100, who gives the medical aid the authority decides to pay R 200 for a service that costs R 100? It is not the medical aids money, it is the clients money. This opens up the door for medical aids to collude with medical service providers to effectively “legally” de***** clients. How can this be? Can someone maybe explain this to me?

This is normal operating procedure and has been happening for decades. I just want to understand the rational behind it or are clients just a means to an end, open to exploration at will? Honestly, the way the cost of medical aid has increased over the last few years is ridiculous, you pay more and get less, the medical aids try their best to stop you from spending what is your money, more and more dictating what you can and can not get and then just to add insult to injury, you are forced to overpay or is overcharged like I mentioned seemingly at will. At this point I would consider a ******** and ******* NHI. It will cost me a small fraction of what I pay now which might allow me to get proper medical attention in another country when I need it using Worldwide Health Insurance. Might actually be cheaper.

So after a nice response it boils down to the Medical aid deciding to pay more for a service when it actually costs less and of course if the service costs more you have to pay. You being the client and the actual owner of the actual funds have no say in it. This makes as much sense as the medical aid almost wanting to force you to do wellness test each year where they see fit, almost forcing you into a mentorship program but refusing to pay for a blood sugar tester. Go figure. If only we did not have such an ***********, ******** and ******** government. A NHI would not be such a bad idea.

Indeed you have responded and I am reporting back on the response and explanation from the medical aid itself. This is in the public interest so that the public is aware of this practice. The short version, I would never pay R500 for a service that was invoiced at R300. The medical aids decided you must pay R500 for a service that was invoiced at R300. What is interesting is that if you are invoiced at R500 and the medical aid decided that they will only pay R300 then they will only pay R300. Call me silly but this just does not sit well with me.
