Make sure you jump through all Discovery Health's hoops to get your medical expenses covered. Hey! At least you earn Vitality points for jumping!

I fork out close to R3000 a month for my Classic Prioty plan and I have been registered for asma as a PMB condition with Discovery Health since 2005.

At the end of last year, I asked my GP to change all my medication to generics in an effort to reduce the co-pays, depleting my medical savings plan by April every year.

I recently learnt that I have been paying for all my chronic meds out of my medical savings plan instead of the Chronic Illness Benefit in 2016. Only when the ******** pharmacist assistant informed me that my medical aid will not pay for my chronic meds because my medical savings plan has run out, did I realise what was going on.

You know that e-mail you get from ********** after you visited the pharmacy or doctor? I always open the mail and check if my claim has been paid or not. What you don't find out by merely opening the mail is from which fund the claim has been paid. To find that information, you have to click on the link for the breakdown. As co-payments would be deducted from your medical savings plan and registered PMB meds from the CIB fund, even this breakdown can be confusing. But hey, Discovery cannot be held responsible for your lack of knowlege on how their systems work. They provide this information freely and openly.

Okay, so I take it on the chin. My doctor should have submitted the new script to the CIB department and I should click all the links on the mails sent from Discovery Claims. As I've worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a decade, I am more educated on how medical aids work than most people, and even I get it wrong. Good luck to you layperson, the chances of you picking up on little glitches like this are pretty slim.

What I don't understand is why new medicines have to be registered on chronic if I am already registered for asthma? And I am curious to know how many claims have not been paid because of this requirement in the past 10 years.

To expect Discovery to pay me back what I have lost over the past 10 years would be rediculous as it would be a logistical nightmare. But my dearest Discovery... I pay you R4700 a month to insure my Health, my Vitality, my Car and my Life. We have picked up the mistake, we have registered the new meds, why can I not be reimbursed for PMB claims against my medical savings plan in 2016?

Dear Jeanette-craig
Thank you for taking the time to speak to me today. Unfortunately we are unable to back date your Chronic Illness Benefit as a benefit becomes active upon application and approval.

Thank you Sirgree for getting back to me.
What I understood from Discovery's response is that the reason they cannot back pay me for previous claims against my medical savings plan which should have gone off my chronic illness benefit is that they are trying to be 'unfair' to all members. If they reimburse me, they have to reimburse all members realizing that they have been paying for their PMB conditions out of the wrong fund with Discovery Health.
