Life & death cover not provided to expectant mother

Two years ago, I suffered a catastrophic hemorrhagic stroke, resulting in a massive intracranial bleed that necessitated two emergency brain surgeries. During these procedures, a major vein and artery in my brain were coiled to staunch the hemorrhage, and a substantial portion of my skull was reconstructed with a metal plate and *****s to restore its integrity. This ordeal plunged me into a fight for survival, confining me to a hospital bed and, subsequently, a wheelchair for months as I endured the grueling process of relearning to walk and regain function on the affected side of my body.

My medical records, which Discovery Health possesses and has re**** upon to approve prior interventions, bear witness to the severity of my condition and the fragility of my recovery.

Last year, I became pregnant. Initially, I clung to the desire for a natural birth, a dream cherished by many expectant mothers. However, my gynecologist, an expert in maternal care, delivered a sobering and unequivocal assessment: the cranial pressure attendant to natural delivery poses an intolerable risk to my survival and that of my unborn child.

She explicitly refused to sanction such a course, stating that she could not guarantee I would emerge from labor alive. Quite a chilling prognosis. Faced with this dire warning, I sought the safest path forward: a cesarean section, a procedure medically necessary to protect two lives hanging in the balance.

Given that Discovery Health is fami**** with my medical history - I app**** for pre-authorization for the C-section. My application was accompanied by a detailed letter of motivation articulating the life-and-death stakes of this procedure along with supporting scans, medical reports, and pathology results that leave no room for doubt as to its necessity. My gynaecologist assured me that Discovery would assist in cover it, as this was no choice of my own.

To my relief, Discovery Health granted pre-authorization, a decision I interpreted as an acknowledgment of the procedure’s critical importance. Yet, to my dismay, upon submitting my claims post-procedure, I discovered that the costs were not fully covered.

When I sought clarification, I was met with a response that has left me reeling: I was informed that, because the authorization was obtained prior to my admission, the Scheme deems this a “planned procedure” rather than an “in-hospital Prescribed Minimum Benefit,” thereby justifying partial coverage.

This strikes me as not only unconscionable, but fundamentally at odds with the principles of equity and humanity that ought to govern a medical aid scheme. To suggest that I should have foregone pre-authorization - effectively gambling with my life and that of my child by awaiting an unplanned, emergency procedure - merely to secure full funding seems cruel, and dishonest when I was informed ahead fo time that natural birth is in no way an option. I needed to be honest with the situation I was in, and communicate that to my medical aid.

Discovery Health’s position appears to penalize me for acting prudently in concert with my physician’s expert guidance, rather than rewarding foresight that averted a potentially bad outcome. The purpose of medical aid is to safeguard life, and it feels like there's so much red tape, and void of any emotion or reason. It's disappointing.

I have subsequently taken steps to upgrade my medical aid in light of this. Not seeing this as a loop hole, but rather upgrade my plan after finding out natural birth is not an option, so as to do right by my medical aid in the knowledge I now have.

I'm pleading with Discovery Health to reconsider this decision, to review the medical evidence, and honor the spirit of aid that I feel they should uphold.
