It's not their problem

Finding a way to begin telling my experience has been difficult. I joined discovery because I was not happy with my previous medical aid. I had heard great things and in joining them I was offered a lot more than I had previously which made me happy. In March of 2022 my partner and I decided to take an exciting and terrifying step in our relationship and wanted to start thinking about expanding our family. I had never been more excited. Every second of my free time went to thinking about names, baby rooms and just how my dreams were about to come true. This came to a complete halt when the gynea informed me that Cervical Cancer had been detected. Reality hit hard. I had never once thought about something like that before. I never once pictured me having problems conceiving, let alone having cancer. Dealing with discovery had been fine up until I needed to go to the gynea. Something I had been doing since I was 16 years old. They told me that no gynea visit would be paid for because my GP had not recommended me. This meant that I had to fork out R5000 for my Cervical biopsy. Once this had been done and results came back, it was decided that I needed Laser of the Cervix. I was terrified. However trying to get approval to go in for this procedure has been exhausting and painful. We are not at the stage where they are refusing to pay because I have chosen a gynea (who I've had for 9 years now) that doesn't work in a hospital that they approve of. This means that I will have to pay for the procedure entirely. I have been so emotional these past couple of months. I feel defeated and broken, which is not fair. I put my trust, my health and my future health in Discovery and they have disappointed me. They don't care for you, it's not them who this cancer affects. I am extremely hurt by their unreasonable expectations. You have made a difficult time in my life that much more difficult. I am very disappointed in you and humanity. This is a life we are fighting for, but for discovery it is about the money. It's a sad world.
