Irresponsible chronic authorisation department.

I have been diagnosed with Chronic bipolar depression. I have been prescribed numerous anti depressions that are available and registered in SA and have had adverse reactions to them. I have only had positive results with Venlor 375 mg and Voxra 125 mg which the medical aid only pays a percentage. In addition, I am taking Maktuda, a relatively new medication on the market. This medication Is very costly. As there is no generic in South Africa, I cannot afford to purchase this medication. I am currently unemployed and can barely meet the monthly payment and rely on family for assistance. I require this medication for a period of 6 months. At present, I have only 1 tablet left and am heading for a relapse and hospitalisation which will cost Discovery more. The generic of Maktuda has been authorised by the medical aid. However, after consultation, the generic is not available in South Africa. Firstly, I fail to understand, how one of the so called reputable medical aids in the country is unaware that there is NO generic for this medication. This calls to question the individuals who handle the authorisation of medication. An error of such magnitude can have an effect on individuals if not death. How can they be so irresponsible. If they can find a REGISTERED generic in the country, I will gladly welcome it and might even write a retraction. All I asked was that my Voxra, Venlor and Maktuda be covered in full (Maktuda only for six months). I have family members who are covered by Gems and even they pay for this medication. I suggest that if you have close family members on Gems ask them to include you as their dependant. You will save and get more value for your money. As a member of Discovery for 20 years I expected better. They do not care whether their patients have mental breakdowns or even die. But miss one payment and they suspend the medical aid immediately. What kind of medical aid is this that only caters for the rich and ignore the rest. I might cancel this medical all together and get something better and cheaper. My advice, as a loyal member of medical aid, is to consider your options carefully, as they themselves do not know what medication is available in the country. They don’t deliver and are more concerned whether you go to the gym or not.

I am still awaiting a response from Discovery. Are they waiting until I have a complete relapse?
