Insensitive treatment after family death
My brother, a Discovery member, died suddenly this month. My father, a pensioner and executor of my brother's estate, contacted the call centre to ask about how he could go about cancelling membership. He was told to submit a copy of the death certificate. As he does not have access to email and I scanner, I did so on his behalf. Days later, Discovery sent me a consent form requesting that the member grant me consent to obtain details on his membership. I then called the call centre to follow up on the matter and to explain the circumstances. The call centre agent then asked what I would like them to do with the membership! I requested that based on the fact that the member had passed away, membership had to be cancelled with immediate effect. She had confirmed that membership would be cancelled effective as of 31/03/2015 and was unable to explain why this was the case when the member had died in Feb. When I requested to speak to a supervisor, I was told very rudely that my brother had not been a member since March 2014 and that no further details could be provided to me as I was not the executor. If membership was not active, why was a copy of the death certificate requested?
Thank you for your comment.
I tried contacting you telephonically, however was not able to reach you. I sent you an email in this regard as well.
Firstly I would to offer you and your family our deepest condolences for the loss of your brother.
I would also like to apologise for the way in which your query was handled, I have addressed this with the relevant managers to avoid any re-occurrences of this nature.
I was unable to find any notes relating to your father call. This may mean that the consultant was supplying general information regarding the withdrawal process and never physically accessed the policy.
Once again, I am so sorry for the frustration that you experienced in this regard.
Please let me know if you require any further assistance.
Kind regards
Danita
