Inadequate allowance for new spectacles

I had an eye test recently and was prescribed new spectacles by the Optometrist who examined me. The cost of the new glasses is R9600. Of this amount, Discovery has offered to pay less than 50%, based on the paltry limit of R4200 per person covered by the scheme (and this is on your Comprehensive plan, which costs many thousands of rands per month). I have been a loyal customer of Discovery Health for years, and also make use of a raft of other Discovery products, for which I pay handsomely. I spoke to an agent and a manager in your Call Centre this morning and was basically told that nothing could be done. The manager offered to send me a form to apply for a special additional payment, but also revealed that this would increase the size of my self-payment gap before the above threshold benefit kicks in, thus rendering the special payment pointless in my opinion. This is a woefully inadequate way to treat a customer of many years standing, and I am now seriously considering my position w.r.t. the other Discovery products I am using, as I feel I am being ********** here.

Hello cmos007,

Thank you for your comment.

As discussed we confirmed that the limit is in place as a risk management tool. We cannot override this plan limit as we need to be fair to all members past, present and future. We will however take this into consideration going forward when reviewing benefit changes.

Thank you for allowing us to address your concerns.

Regards
