I was conned into taking Vitality Health for 2 years! Do not be like me!!!!
Let me start with a disclaimer, I hate Discovery Health with a passion. What you are going to read in this review is an angry rant. Let me started at the beginning. After my wife's death due to illness I realized the importance of having a 'good'medical aid. I did my due diligence and settled on Discovery Health. Now when I first spoke to their consultant, they did the normal, nothing more and nothing less. I settled on a plan and after much badgering by the consultant accepted a free three month trial of Vitality Health. I was unaware at this stage the free trial came with a major 'stuff you' clause. That being, I would have to cancel it if I did not want it at the end of the three months. Covid came and things got a bit hectic... No help from Discovery during this time despite being on deaths door, but hey-ho who cares. I had also got GAP cover when I signed up. Being diagnosed with sleep apnea post covid and discovering how useless GAP cover was I cancelled it. Not really a criticism of GAP cover, as sleep apnea is just not treated as a real issue until you are on deaths door. I digress, Two years later I get a letter from Discovery announce another round of increases in premium. I realise as a single person my cover had become totally un-affordable. I phone a consultant to downgrade to a lower package and after finally having reduced my cover to next to nothing but a hospital bed I could finally see a light at the financial end of the tunnel. Just as the consultant is about to sign off she mentions Vitality Health and I tell her no thanks, if I can barely pay my existing premiums why would I want Vitality Health. And she says, no sir, I see you are already a member. To cut a long story short, I had been paying for Vitality Health for over two years. Yes I kid you not, a product I had never used. What makes this worse is I was down grading my product to make it affordable and it was only a by the chance statement from the consultant that informed me of the joys of Vitality Health. R300 plus a month for nothing. I told her to cancel it. She said she could not as they were different companies and I needed to phone Vitality to cancel. Fudge me, I was fuming. I asked for a transcript of my original conversation with the consultant who conned me into the thing in the first place and I ended going down a rabbit hole of bureaucracy to the point where I still do not know if I originally agreed to Vitality or not. It just ceased to be worth my sanity trying to get a straight answer from the various call centre people I spoke to. So basically all I can do is warn people. Never accept a free trail of Vitality Health and if you are on Discovery Health check to see what you are paying for. Because other than a letter saying welcome to Vitality, they send you nothing and tell you even less. Lesson learned is simple. Do not trust consultants and always check what is being deducted from your bank account, even if it is a normal debit order!!!! Like I said at the beginning, I really hate Discovery health with a passion. But I hate myself even more for being so stupid as not to have realised I was on Vitality.
