19 Mar 2026, 14:26I am writing to formally lodge a complaint against Discovery Health regarding the handling of an emergency medical situation involving my sister on 17 March 2026.
My sister, who is currently pregnant and registered on your maternity programme, began experiencing severe bleeding on the above date and was urgently rushed to hospital. Upon arrival at Beacon Bay Life Hospital, medical staff indicated that an emergency C-section was required to save both mother and baby.
However, the hospital advised that they were unable to proceed with the life-saving procedure due to Discovery Health declining or delaying authorization. This delay placed my sister under severe emotional distress at a time when she was already facing a critical medical emergency, putting both her life and the life of her unborn child at further risk.
As a result, we were placed under immense pressure and had no choice but to urgently borrow an amount of R40,000 in order for the procedure to go ahead and ensure the safe delivery of the baby.
This situation is both distressing and unacceptable.
We were explicitly informed when enrolling in the maternity programme that hospitalisation and emergency procedures related to pregnancy would be covered. It is therefore extremely concerning that, in a life-threatening emergency, authorization was not granted timeously, and we are now being told that hospitalisation is not covered.
We have formally requested access to the recorded call(s) during which Discovery Health representatives confirmed the benefits and coverage under the maternity programme, as this directly contradicts what we are currently being told.
We require the following as a matter of urgency:
- A full written explanation as to why authorization for an emergency C-section was not granted.
- Clarification on the maternity benefits and what is covered, specifically regarding emergency hospitalisation.
- A copy of all call recordings and communication related to the maternity programme and this incident.
- Reimbur*****t of the R40,000 paid under duress for a life-saving procedure.
Given the seriousness of this matter, the undue stress caused, and the risk posed to both mother and child, we are currently considering legal action should this not be resolved promptly and satisfactorily.
We expect a response within a reasonable timeframe
