A Plea for Urgent Assistance – Discovery Health

I am writing this message not in anger or to complain, but as a desperate plea for help. I truly hope that someone at Discovery Health who has the authority and compassion to assist will see this and reach out to us.

My stepfather has been advised by both of his surgeons that he requires emergency spinal surgery. They have each submitted detailed motivating letters clearly stating that if this procedure is not performed in the very near future, he may be left permanently paralysed. This is not elective. It is urgent and life-altering.

We have now had his request rejected twice on the basis that the procedure does not fall within the parameters of PMB. We understand that medical aid assessments must follow policies and guidelines, and we acknowledge that there are complexities to this case that I cannot fully explain in a short post like this. However, the reality remains that time is something my stepfather simply does not have.

My mother pleaded to speak to a supervisor to better understand the decision and to explain the urgency of his condition, but we were told that no one could speak to us directly and that we could submit an application to a higher level and wait several weeks for feedback. With the risk of permanent paralysis hanging over him, waiting weeks is not an option.

We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for someone to listen to our case with urgency and compassion. We are asking for the opportunity to engage with someone who can reconsider the medical evidence and help us find the best possible way forward.

If anyone from Discovery Health sees this, please reach out. We are willing to provide all medical reports, surgeon motivations, and any additional information required. We are simply a family trying to prevent a devastating, irreversible outcome.
