Handed over with no communication

On Saturday 7/3/2015 I received a text message from attorneys SSDA asking for payment on my Discovery account, which had been handed over to them for collection. I called Discovery to find out what this was about & discovered that it was a shortfall on my MSA when I moved from my own scheme to my partners scheme in November 2014 (also Discovery). In October Discovery emailed me through my membership certificate & made no mention of any outstanding monies. They have used my email address & have telephoned me in the past, however when they want to get money from me they decide to send communication via post! The postal service which was on strike for months! The invoice was emailed through to me today which I have duly paid. The invoice does not have my full postal address on it, so besides the strike, the poor post office would not have known what to do with it! I find it appalling that Discovery will hand a person over without making any real effort to make contact. I'm sure the NCR will find this very interesting. Discovery will have to foot the bill for any interest charged on the account by SSDA.

Hello jcadger,

Thank you for your comment.

The Medical Savings Account (MSA) is a fixed amount that Discovery Health gives you at the beginning of the year for day-to-day medical expenses. You pay this amount back to us in 12 equal monthly instalments but, if necessary, you are free to use the whole amount at the beginning of the year to pay for valid medical expenses. The 12 instalments form part of your monthly contribution.

If you leave the Discovery Health Medical Scheme part-way through the year, we calculate how much of the MSA you have used and how much you have contributed to it. If you have used more from the account than what you have paid into the account, then you will need to pay the difference to us.

As discussed we have closed the collection file with the external agency and confirmed that the amount owing to the Scheme has been settled. Please accept my apologies for the manner in which your query was handled.

Thank you for allowing me to assist with your query.

Kind regards
Jashvir
