Found out my very expensive medical aid doesn't actually cover anything
Posting this here because the Discovery portal refuses to let me submit a complaint there - the rest of the website works fine, but glitches when submitting a complaint. How convenient.
I toiled and fought for 3 months at the end of last year to find a medical aid. I settled on Discovery, even after having a bad experience with them in 2013. My instruction to the sales agent was to find a plan that would cover ALL basic medical needs and that I didn't want a savings plan (I had been on a savings plan for 8 months with Discovery in 2013 and two Doctor's appointments wiped out my funds - which is stupidly unrealistic).
The salesperson offered me the Classic Smart option, which I investigated and researched for a week before settling on. I chose this plan because it claims to cover EVERYTHING with minimal co-payments. There is nothing in your sales-pitch that made me nervous about taking that plan and it did not advertise any short-comings or anything left out, unless it was a complicated procedure or issue that required confirmations and permissions. The documentation and sales agent convinced me that all basic procedures are at least covered and that I would be in safe hands. A complete fabrication.
Low and behold... I go for my first checkup under the plan last week and discover that my plan doesn't cover blood-work (standard tests for a checkup) - I have to pay for that myself in entirety. Then I find out the plan doesn't cover x-rays - which is simply unbelievable, how on Earth does medical aid not cover x-rays? What other reason would anyone have to do X-rays other than medical? The plan doesn't actually cover ANYTHING, with the exception of giving me really cheap Doctor's appointment that I still have to do co-payments on. So either way I'm still paying at every point. I pay for the monthly medical aid, I pay for gap cover, I pay for the appointments, I pay for the tests, I pay for the results. At what point does the medical aid actually serve its purpose?
When I contacted Discovery they confirmed that the plan doesn't cover these things (and you still try to sell me gap cover). WHY WOULD ANYONE PAY R3000 A MONTH FOR NOTHING!? Now I find out I can't even change the plan for a full year. This is beyond unacceptable. The entire point of this was to pay for the medical aid and thus not have to pay for anything else - now I'm just paying the medical aid price on top of what I would normally pay for medical without it, and I'm supposed to pretend like this isn't dishonest?
