false info

I moved my wife and and doughter to Discovery from Gems as i have never had trouble from Discovery. Mng managed our medical aid at that moment and I asked them if it would affect the waiting period if my wife gave birth in january. The lady said NO there will be no waiting period for either of them. I then asked at the Discovery office on the mine and their answer was the same. Now suddenly there is a waiting period. How can you be on a waiting period with a baby of 9months. I would have left them at Gems and maybe move to Gems aswell had I knew my medical aid will drop me when I need them most!

Hello LouwrensTheron,

Thank you for your comment.

Underwriting is a risk management tool that assists medical schemes in maintaining their long-term sustainability through the following:

o Protects the scheme against misuse
o Cuts down on potential costs
o Minimises abusive claiming behaviour.

All underwriting complies with legislation. As per the Medical Schemes Act, Medical Schemes are not allowed to decline membership to anyone. The Medical Schemes Act allows medical schemes to protect their risk pools using the certain types of underwriting such as waiting periods.

As discussed the Waiting Period is app**** based on the information provided on the application form. Even though there is a waiting period app**** your wife and daughter have access to Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB). I have emailed you further information regarding this and you may contact us directly with any concerns.
