Essential Smart plan is a load of ******* and nothing more than a glorified hospital plan that costs the same as a basic medical aid. I've been with Discovery for nearly a decade and have gap cover, health and life insurance with them. My 1st incident with them was when one of their advisors sold me gap cover for which a premium was deducted for nearly 3 years. When I eventually claimed they told me I don't have gap cover and even after confirming that the advisor was in the wrong and didn't load the cover he offered me they did not rectify the situation but instead provided me with the option to pay additional backdated premiums or go through another year long waiting period before cover is activated. Today I have to have surgery done and discovery rejected my claim under "special exclusions" even though it is a necessary surgery. I was under the impression my policy was health insurance, however the essential smart plan doesn't cover nasal, back, knee or most major procedures. I took the policy out 5 years ago and was under the impression that most common surgical procedures will be covered which I today found out is not the case. After the initial shock of realizing that I am effectively covered for nothing Discovery cant even offer me the option to upgrade my plan this year meaning I am stuck with inadequate cover for the rest of 2023. They are inflexible, unsympathetic and place the onus on their clients instead of their advisors shifting responsibility away from themselves. I am honestly terrified at this point and will advise anyone who deal with this company to read each and every letter of each and every piece of correspondence they send as they will put all responsibility on their clients and relieve their advisors of any responsibility. I will be exploring other options and would advise anyone to tread with caution when dealing with this bureaucratic mess of a conglomerate.
