Elderly patients should just wait.. wait to die
My moms, a pensioner, went to a specialist Oncologist/Gynaecologist last week Thursday, 28 January. She requires an operation to remove cancerous cysts. It is now a week later, 04 February and we have heard nothing. She is in pain. She believes her time has come. All because she is lost in red tape and which doctor to see and which doctor needs to do what.
We have spent HOURS over the last 2 days on the phone to Discovery trying to understand what is required to get specilalist authorisation. We have been cut of over 6 times and no consultant bothers to call back. The amount of red tape is ridiculous. Doctors submit forms to Discovery, that might not have the information required but there is no feedback to anyone. So an elderly patient should just wait without knowing? Wait to die? How would a pensioner know the numerous types of authourisations required??? Discovery should be administering the process and contacting the doctors for correct information and then updating THEIR CLIENTS. Or maybe there is fine print someplace that states there is no client services in medical aid?
However for yesterday only, I spend 69 minutes on the phone until I was connected to Anele who helped. All other consultants should show the same level of commitment. Call back if call drops else clients need to start the entire process with a different agent the next time.
Please can you escalate this matter as my mother is suffering, she cannot walk and is in tremendous pain waiting for the operation to remove cancerous cysts.

Unfortunately we have hit another snag with the surgeon motivating to have the surgery done at Kloof Hospital (non key care). A consultant has informed us telephonically that it would take 3-5 working days to review the the motivation. REF ***. This is unacceptable as this is an emergency and the patient is in pain.
Please can someone contact me again regarding this as this has become a serious issue and we are trying to avoid simply going to a casualty as my mother has already visited specialists, an oncolgoist, has had scans done and assessed.
