Discovery WORST medical aid in South Africa
After receiving authorization from Discovery in Hospital to have spinal block injections to help repair my herniated disc, a week later I am told that they have revoked my authorization. They say it falls under pain management which they don’t cover. I would never have made the decision then to have the spinal block injections if I knew I would be facing a hospital bill of R 19000 +. How is this legal? I made medical decisions at the time based on what Discovery said they would cover.
On top of this they are the only medical aid who refuse to pay for keyhole surgery to repair a herniated disk. (endoscopic spinal surgery). This breakthrough procedure allows a patient to be awake during surgery and able to return to work the next day as opposed to invasive surgery which requires weeks of pain and downtime.
We have been loyal Discovery members for many years but each year our medical aid costs more and more and Discovery just try their best to apply every loop hole not to pay.

After multiple conversations with various Discovery Consultants, they have informed me out of the 6 procedure codes they don’t cover 1 and so will not approve authorization for the procedure.
This code is for a Tessy microscope. They apparently require the drs to use an alternative microscope.
When queried which microscope they do indeed cover, Discovery pre-authorization department refuse to say and the phone call was cut off.
So basically a ***** excuse not to pay for the procedure despite me even offering to pay the shortfall of that particular code.
Needless to say, I will not be staying with Discovery Health and will be moving our Discovery Life Insurance elsewhere.
