Discovery - Whats the point of having a medical aid?

My wife and I had a baby on the 20th of May, after 16 hours of labor they decided to do an emergency C Section. A day later my son had to be rushed to icu due to an infection. The same day I filled in the application form to add my son to our medical aid but we did not have a birth certificate at that stage.

All the accounts that we got back was rejected by discovery. We have Coastal core hospital and all of the above happened in hospital. The reason they gave us is because we did not pre-authorize . We preauthorized the whole thing in March, but obviously we did not know that it will turnout to be an emergency C- section and that my son will need to go to ICU for 5 days.

We have been phoning (almost R500 in airtime) and every time they say, they will resubmit and then it should be fine. I got the claim back for the maternity hospital this morning for the fifth time and once again it was rejected. Its been like this with all the claims.

So what is the point in having https://www.hellopeter.com/write-a-reviewa hospital plan and paying medical aid if you have to fight for weeks to get them to pay.

All doctors hospitals wants you as an individual to pay and then claim it back yourself. That is why I got medical aid, because I do not have 25k pay and then claim back. I can see why hospitals do this because its impossible to get your money back from discovery!

So if I am in a major accident and cannot phone to get pre authorization discovery does not pay? This is ridicules! I will move from discovery as soon as possible and will definitely let anyone know not to use discovery.
