Discovery Penalises Members for Getting Sick – Be Careful Before You Join
I cancelled my Discovery Health Delta Saver plan after finding a better and more suitable medical scheme.
While I was still an active, paying member in January, I became ill with a gynaecological condition and was referred to a specialist. Like any responsible adult, I sought medical attention instead of ignoring a legitimate health issue.
Now that I’ve cancelled my membership, Discovery is demanding R1,659.89 for “overuse.”
Let me understand this clearly — am I expected to avoid going to the doctor when I’m sick just to avoid being penalised later?
Medical aid is supposed to provide peace of mind, not punishment for using the very benefits we pay for monthly.
At no point was I warned that consulting a specialist under medical referral would result in a post-cancellation charge. There was no proactive communication. Only after leaving do I suddenly owe money.
This feels like a tactic to recover funds from members once they exit — and consumers need to be aware of this.
If you are on the Delta Saver option, understand this clearly: You may still be charged after cancellation for seeking legitimate medical care while fully covered.
