Discovery membership process unfairly leaves members without cover after missing one premium

I would like to raise a formal complaint regarding the way my Discovery Medical Aid membership has been handled after I missed a single premium following retrenchment from my previous employer. After losing my employment, I made the decision to continue my medical aid in my personal capacity because I was trying to ensure that my family and I would not be left without medical cover during a financially difficult period. Despite the financial strain caused by retrenchment, I still attempted to maintain my membership. Unfortunately, I missed only one premium payment. As a result, my membership was suspended immediately. During the suspension period, neither I nor my dependant could access medical benefits, including when my child became ill. What concerns me is that missing one premium has now resulted in: the cancellation/withdrawal of the existing membership, the requirement for an entirely new application, underwriting review processes, and a waiting period of approximately 5 working days without active medical cover. This outcome feels extremely unfair for a member who was simply trying to keep cover active after retrenchment and who only fell behind by one payment during financial hardship. I am also struggling to understand why I would still be expected to pay for a period during which: the membership was suspended, no medical benefits could be used, and Discovery effectively carried no risk because cover was inaccessible. In addition, although the new application may only become active after approximately 5 working days, Discovery will still charge a full monthly premium once activated. From a fairness perspective, this effectively leaves a member paying full price while spending part of the month without medical cover. My concern is not only financial, but also the principle of continuity of care. Medical aid exists to provide security during difficult times, yet the current process appears to penalise members severely for a single missed premium after retrenchment. I respectfully request that Discovery: Review whether a full cancellation and new application process is appropriate after only one missed premium; Reconsider the fairness of charging premiums for periods where benefits were suspended and inaccessible; Urgently process the new employer group application to minimise the period without cover; Improve support mechanisms for retrenched members experiencing temporary financial hardship. I believe members acting in good faith during difficult circumstances should be treated with greater flexibility and fairness.
