Discovery Medical Aid_Worst Medical Aid in SA

We are having a frustrating experience with Discovery Medical Aid. In short, our 8 year old boy was born with Cerebral Palsy. He was accepted on PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefit) in 2016 which allowed him to get regular physiotherapy sessions to treat the cerebral palsy. Unfortunately my husband got retrenched and could not afford medical aid at that time. In December we rejoined Discovery Medical Aid (on the same Coastal Saver Scheme) and we have been trying to get my son back onto PMB again but now Discovery has been giving us the run around since January. We have provided them with supporting reports from: - Dr du Plessis - Orthopaedic Surgeon - Core Competencies is Paediatric & Reconstructive Orthopaedics - His treating physiothe****** at Dial a Physio - and even a Gait Analysis Report. Their initial reason for rejection was that they required a report from his General Practioner. I queried this as the Orthopedic Surgeon is far more specialized in the field. Unfortunately this was said telephonically and Discovery doesn’t respond on our requests for the call recording. My husband then contacted Discovery and was told after investigation that the application was rejected as the required treatment was not included. We then resubmitted again and now we are told the following, and I quote: - A report from the treating doctor confirming admission of the neonate to hospital within 28 days of birth - History or report of the neurological abnormality(ies) from the treating doctor (Paediatrician, Neurologist, Paediatric surgeon, Paediatric Neurologist) Cerebral Palsy is not something that you wake up with one day and at his age it simply gets worse as he gets older as his body is still developing. When he walked for the first time 4 years ago, he was able to put both feet flat on the floor, now his one foot has lost over 40% on his ankle. Their form required that we include “detailed documentation to support your application”. Twice we have provided reports from Doctors that are far more specialized in this field than what they requested. While they keep coming up with innovative ways to keep rejecting these applications, my son is suffering and his condition is deteriorating. We have been struggling with this issue since January and this application has to be done yearly, is this the standard at which they treat the people that are supporting their medical aid? Medical Aid is costing thousands per month but each and every treatment so far is being deducted from our Medical Savings Account because they are not approving the PMB application. Surely this can not be their standard? He needs an mobility vehicle as well, as well as crutches but once again Discovery also came back stating that this can not be covered and should also be paid out of the savings account. I have no words other that Discovery health is an absolute terrible medical aid and I would strongly advise anyone against using them.
