Discovery Medical Aid & Health: A Disappointing Experience with Emergency Care and Plan Changes
My recent experience with Discovery Medical Aid and Health has left me extremely disappointed. On June 1st, I visited the emergency room at Morningside Mediclinic for severe constipation. After being assisted and discharged on the same day, I was immediately required to pay R930, despite providing my medical aid details and signing the necessary forms. I was told I could claim this amount back, but the report provided by the hospital reflected a lower figure than what I paid.
I submitted my claim to Discovery the following day. After 3 or 4 days with no sign of the claim, I had to resubmit it. To my dismay, it was declined, with Discovery stating my plan was not eligible for a Medical Savings Account (MSA), and therefore, there was no money to cover the claim.
What's particularly frustrating is that Discovery owes me close to R3,000 from my previous plan. I downgraded to my current plan on May 30th, and I was under the impression I would still have access to my MSA funds until at least the end of June. However, the new plan kicked in immediately, which even Discovery admits is unusual as all financial plan changes are supposed to take 30 days.
Now, not only am I out of pocket for the R930 paid to the hospital, but I also owe the emergency doctor an additional R800. This is despite it being an emergency visit to a network hospital. Apparently, if you're not admitted, you're liable for all costs out of pocket, regardless of the charges. It seems absurd that I would be expected to force a doctor to admit me just so Discovery would cover the costs. This crucial information was never communicated to me, and it's a significant oversight that leaves members vulnerable to unexpected expenses.
This entire ordeal has been incredibly frustrating and highlights a severe lack of clarity and consistency in Discovery's processes and communication.
