Discovery Medical Aid Forced Me to Pay R28,000 for Urgent Hernia and Nissen Surgery – Outrageous and Unfair

I have been a loyal Discovery Medical Aid member for 10 years, consistently upgrading my plan and paying higher premiums, trusting that I would be protected when I needed it most. Recently, I suffered from severe gastro and heartburn, losing significant weight and vomiting mucus-like substances. My condition worsened despite all conventional treatments, and my surgeon urgently recommended hernia repair combined with Nissen fundoplication. This was not optional—it was life-affecting and urgent. When I sought authorization from Discovery, I was told I had to pay R28,000 out of pocket, even though both procedures are listed under Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB). I made numerous calls, explained the seriousness of my condition, and even escalated the matter to the dispute committee—all to no avail. Discovery’s justification? Coverage only applies if the hernia is gangrenous, obstructed, or if the patient is under 18. This is outrageous, cruel, and unacceptable. Despite paying substantial premiums for a decade, I was forced to take loans and use rent money just to access urgent, life-saving surgery. Discovery app**** a blanket policy over a medically urgent, individual case, ignoring both the PMB rules and the human impact. No member should ever have to choose between their health and financial survival. This is a warning: loyalty and high premiums do not guarantee protection when your life is on the line. Discovery must be held accountable and urgently review how it handles PMB cases, especially when members are facing life-affecting medical emergencies. I am sharing my story to demand fairness, accountability, and change.

Reviewer Update
This is just an update on my original complaint.
After posting my first Hello Peter review about Discovery refusing to cover my medically necessary hernia repair and Nissen surgery (despite the ICD-10 codes falling under PMB and me having to pay R28,000 out-of-pocket), someone from Discovery did reach out to me.
Unfortunately, the call made no meaningful difference. I received the exact same explanation I had already been given multiple times — just from a different representative. None of the clinical circumstances were addressed in detail, and there was no deeper engagement with the severity of my condition or why the surgery was required.
I submitted every report they requested, involved the disputes team, made several calls, and provided before-and-after medical evidence. Yet the outcome has remained exactly the same, and the responses feel standardised rather than case-specific.
At this point, I’m simply putting this update out there so that other Discovery members can see the pattern and share whether they’ve experienced something similar — especially with cases involving PMB claims or medically necessary surgeries.
If my experience helps others who may be going through the same cycle of denials and blanket responses, then at least some good can come from it.
