Discovery lets down customers when needed most

I recently completed a trip to India in which I was hospitalised for a day in Varanasi. Due to the nature of my illness, I was rushed to hospital on the morning of the 4th July 2015. I did not have access to a phone and was very drowsy upon admission. The hospital was located in a very rural part of the city and was quite basic. I was fortunate and only had to spend the day in the hospital being treated for sever dehydration.

What I have learned from many friends and family is that Discovery are masters at avoiding payments on claims. They've deliberately set up a number of completely arbitrary hoops which their customers are expected to jump through should they harbor any hopes of receiving payment.

With my recent claim, I've become their latest victim.

The hoop, that I didn't log my admission to the hospital with their international SOS call centre!

Besides for the fact that this was never a possibility, it's an entirely arbitrary rule which I'm sure helps them avoid many payments.

It's frankly disgraceful that a loyal premium paying customer of more than 5 years gets abandoned by Discovery when they're needed most. I've paid thousands to this company, and for what??

Hello brandon.ellse,

Dear Mr Elise

Thank you for your comment on Hello Peter.

Further to the written feedback provided, we understand that you were unable to contact International SOS to inform them about your international treatment and we have retrospectively reviewed your request based on the information provided.

Based on this information an explanation was provided with regards to the Scheme's reason for the funding of the claim in accordance to the benefit, which I trust explains our funding decision.

Kind regards
Meryl
