Discovery isn't willing to provide information on how they calculate what they say we owe.
My father passed away, in hospital, early in April. Discovery have since demanded we repay the balance of the Medical Saving Account which was utilised in advance of the premiums, which is a reasonable request.
We have, however, on numerous occasions, both by email and telephonically, requested a reconciliation of the outstanding balance. Discovery Health has been delinquent in providing this reconciliation and calculation of the outstanding balance, which is not only *********, but contrary to the Consumer Protection Act. The reason for us requesting this detail is that the expenses incurred were, we believe, related to when he was in hospital. On the Classic Comprehensive plan, all in-hospital expenses should be covered, and Discovery’s unwillingness to show the calculations, and instead sending emails stating that they are handing the debt over, indicates to me that they are using bully tactics to avoid paying costs which should be covered under the risk component of the plan.
All we have been asking for is the detailed breakdown of the outstanding balance and will willingly pay if the amounts are for our account but all emails from them come from a "no-reply" email address which means every time you end up with someone in a call centre who does nothing anyway.
Perhaps it is time to look at moving my Medical Aid, cancelling my Vitality, terminating my Discovery Insure policies and closing my Discovery Bank account, because in spite of their "Better Healthcare" and "Comprehensive Benefits" advertising, they obviously don't care.
