Discovery International Travel Insurance....

So, my wife was travelling to Australia 8th August, so part of her traveling was to ensure she was covered for any medical emergencies. Discovery is my medical aid so I got the necessary forms and filled them in, great covered. A few days after she had landed in Australia she had the misfortune of chewing on something and broke her tooth. A dentist was in urgent need because of the pain etc. She went, I paid via her nephew who paid in Australian Dollar. Dentists are super expensive in Australia, so I've found out. So this is where everything went wrong, I physically went and submitted all the paperwork at Discovery in Sandton main branch. I then also submitted the same paperwork on line via email. I received confirmation and was expecting a response with in more or less 10 days later. Yet to no avail having been back twice and empty promises by Louren and others, that I would be contacted the same day before 5pm... Just like everyone else that has made promises from Discovery and yet nothing has been done about my claim, let alone to get a call back. But at the end of the month when I need to pay for my Medical Aide it happens without a blink of an eye. Absolutely disgusting that I've got to make trips on empty promises and broken promises about my case been escalated to high importance... yet no one is doing anything about it.

Well its been a while now, and indeed after my writing on this forum, I got a phone call. And a whatsup telling me not to worry there's been a bit of a mix up, but not to worry its getting sorted out. They just needed a letter from the dentist explaining what he did. Candice from MSO Discovery said she would get it all done and I wasn't to worry. So I haven't worried however, on Friday I sent a message on Whatsup (two weeks later), to the same number, and no reply. Another message today, no reply . Last resort "Hello Peter" again , now I might get someone calling me. Why cant people follow up....and do the right thing.

So again I've been back to Discovery office inn Sandton to little more than a long wait " please hold while I try sort out your problem (15 min later), I got an answer. The claim has been approved from MSO International on the 2nd Dec 2023 and had been returned to Discovery for payment. To my astonishment, I found it, but here is the funny thing. Discovery call it a "Travel Insurance" , however it is not any form of Insurance, it is an agreement that they will accept a claim once approved by MSO International and use your savings (pending on which scheme you are on) to pay you out or pay the Invoice from the doctor / dentist outside of our borders. In other words read the small writing before using your Discovery medical Aide as a Travel Insurance , Because it's not an Insurance per say...
So in hindsight, I didn't have any money left in my savings (dentist / doctors visits in the beginning of the year) thus now I am to accept that I have to pay (out of my pocket) a R8000.00 bill for my wife's dentist even though I had "Travel Insurance" from Discovery.
Be careful people, it's so easy to get the Travel Insurance from Discovery Medical Aide (only for a 90 day period), sadly no one tells you exacting how it works, it's not an Insurance the way I understand Insurances work. Deeply regrettable to use them and not a proper Insurance company.
