Discovery Internal Inefficiencies

I am writing this review to express my profound frustration with Discovery Health and their handling of my recent medical claim. I am a loyal Discovery Health customer, paying significant premiums for what I assumed would be comprehensive coverage, but my recent experience has been nothing short of disappointing.

In September 2024, my GP referred me to Mediclinic Stellenbosch for emergency monitoring. After receiving care at the clinic, I was left with a bill exceeding R1400. However, when I submitted the claim to Discovery Health, I was informed that the costs would not be covered because of insufficient documentation. This seemed strange, as my doctor had completed the necessary PMB application form. I was then told that the hospital needed to fill out the form and that I should provide them with a casualty report and test results to proceed.

Despite numerous calls and emails to Mediclinic Stellenbosch, I was told I would need to pay an additional R800 for the casualty report before they would release any documentation. This seemed utterly unreasonable to me – how does it make sense that I would need to pay R800 more, on top of a R1400 hospital bill, just to obtain the documentation needed to get my medical aid to cover the costs?

To my utter disbelief, Discovery Health still refused to cover the bill due to what they called “insufficient documentation,” even though I followed every instruction and paid my premiums diligently. The lack of support and poor communication between the hospital and Discovery Health has left me with a bill that is not part of my budget and I am extremely disappointed by this outcome.

As a customer, I expect better from a company that I trust with my health care needs. Discovery Health needs to do better in ensuring claims are processed fairly and efficiently, and that customers are not left in financial distress due to internal inefficiencies.
