Discovery Health - Where ***** is the name of the game

In March 2018 I informed Discovery that I had resigned from my job and would move my medical aid to private cover as it was subsidized by the company.

I also requested that I be removed from the cover and only my wife and child to continue. Discovery sent me all the relevant forms which I filled out and submitted.

I informed Discovery that my participation must terminate at the end of March and the cover for my wife and child would be deducted from my bank account.

All of this was done well within time however Discovery messed up and still charged me as a member of the cover. I contacted Discovery and informed them of the mixup and that I had emigrated from SA. They asked for proof of my emigration, which I duly provided. Now Discovery say they are going to review my request and I will be charged for May as well.

This is utter madness and ****************. I submitted all the required documentation and proof long ago and Discovery are just trying to continue ***********. They have already charged a full cover for April which should not even be the case as I had already submitted all the paper work and informed them telephonically as well.

I demand a refund for my portion of the April charge and also that Discovery stop ripping me off. I also want to terminate the cover with Discovery completely as I don't trust these *****s.

Received this wonderful response Discovery Health today.... what a load of nonsense Dear Mr Pillay Thank you for contacting us. Money owed to the Scheme We requested proof of travel to review backdating your last date of cover, as an exception, because: We need notice 30 days in advance for any financial changes. When you initially sent the request to us, you did not confirm the date you wanted your cover to end. We have now received your proof of travel; however, we need to make you aware of the amount due to the Scheme if we withdraw you from this membership effective 31 March 2018. The main member will owe an amount to the Scheme because you claimed more from the Medical Savings Account (MSA) than you have contributed for the year. We have included a summary of what the calculation will be based on. MSA over-expenditure We made the full MSA balance of R18 192.00 available up front and you pay it back to the Scheme in monthly payments, as part of your contributions. Please find the summary below: Member Role Contributions to the MSA per month Number of months contributed Annual contributions to the MSA Previn Principal (01/01/2018 - 31/03/2018) R693.00 3 R2 079.00 Spouse (01/04/2018 -31/12/2018) R546.00 9 R4 914.00 Total 12 R6 993.00 Suanne Spouse (01/01/2018 - 31/03/2018) R546.00 3 R1 638.00 Principal (01/04/2018 - 31/12/2018) R693.00 9 R6 237.00 Total 12 R7 875.00 Gessemae Kyrah Child (***) R277.00 12 R3 324.00 Total 12 R3 324.00 Total contribution to MSA (R6 993.00 + R7 875.00 + R 3324.00) 12 R18 192.00 If your cover ends effective 31/03/2018, the main member will owe R4 914.00 to the Scheme because you have claimed more from the MSA than you have contributed towards it. This is because you have used the full MSA balance of R18 192, but would have only contributed R13 278.00 towards the MSA. Claim reversals The main member will also be responsible for claims that we paid, for services rendered after your cover ends. We have attached a Claims Transaction History (CTH) report, showing claims that we have processed for you after 31/03/2018. These claims will be reversed if you are withdrawn effective 31/03/2018. Acknowledging the amount owing to the Scheme Before we give you feedback about your withdrawal request, the main member must acknowledge the debt and agree to settle any amount owing to the Scheme by completing the attached form. We will confirm the final amount owing to the Scheme, if your request is approved. You can fax the completed form to ********** or email it to ********** Please allow 2-3 working days for feedback. Alternatively, you can contact our Settlement Solutions Department on ********** to make a payment arrangement. Should you have further queries on this, you can email ********** Regards Sesha Bukun Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd On behalf of Discovery Health Medical Scheme

Well this is ridiculous The main member is my wife and no she will not be in a position to pay that amount as I will be the one paying and I do not have money to pay that amount Well this process was never explained to me at any point and I never signed any agreement with Discovery stating that Discovery will allocate me an MSA and then recover the MSA from my monthly payments. Also I never signed any agreement that Discovery can charge me to cover the MSA funds used if I terminate the cover at a certain point. None of these wonderful clauses were explained to me telephonically. With such conditions it should be the duty of Discovery to ensure that it explains these things to people upfront and fully. This is a blatant disregard of transparency. Please explain where I agreed to and signed such a contract and in what form it was explained to me. Because if that is not the case then this basically constitutes a violation of the CPA. Basically thats the norm for big corporations, tie you down to contracts without explaining these hidden clauses and traps and then knock you senseless when it suits them. Of course everybody just has 5 grand laying about to throw into Discovery's massive bank vault.
