Discovery Health refused to authorise admission and treatment for a confirmed covid case
on the 10 December 2020 at 9 in the morning I was rushed to Lendmed Hospital because I could not breath I had shortness pf breath. When I arrived there i was treated as an emergency and put on continuous oxygen. My chest x ray confirmed a pneumonia and i was also swabbed for covid and for this reason the attending doctor wanted to admit me. However Discovery Health as my health care provider refused to give authorisation for my admission with the explanation that i did not have medical aid cover for two months, Oct and Nov. Before this time i was a member of the scheme until end of September when i was retrenched from my previous employer. when i got another job appointment on the 1st of November my application to join rejoin Discovery was sent back and forth because of unclear documents until finally it came effective on the 1st of December and it stated that there is no waiting period since all of us with my dependants have not been without medical cover for 90 days. So i was shocked when they did not want to authorise my admission even after my covid 19 results came back positive which is a pmb condition. As a result i had to be transferred to a public hospital where i spent 11 days of which the first 8 days i was on continuous oxygen. Discovery Health let me down in the worst possible way i could have lost my life in the mean while i have cover to ensure that i receive treatment in time of need.
