Discovery Health medical cover FAILED me on my accident

In August 2019 I had a terrible fall where a ladder gave out underneath me and fell roof height to the ground. I have broken my scaphoid in my left hand and sustained fracture in one of the vertebrae in my lower spine.

I had to go to the casualties at hospital and a lot of X-Rays and a CT scan had to be done. I was referred to a Orthopaedic Surgeon which determined that an operation on the scaphoid was needed. I had the operation done.

After some time, doctors and service providers processed their claims and I noted all the claims from my visit at the hospital's casualties came from my day to day savings. 3 years of savings of almost R14 000 was GONE in the blink of an eye. The CT scan alone was almost R8200!!!

Then the nightmare started. My 3 years of medical savings was depleted and the statements of my unpaid claims of my accident started coming in. All these unpaid claims ruined me financially that I had no other choice in cancelling my medical aid and making payment arrangement with the doctors and service providers that wasn't paid.

Why have medical cover if they can't even give you peace of mind when you had an accident??? I would have expected that the whole of this accident to be covered without affecting my day to day savings at all and without ruining me financially.

So the lesson to be learned from this is to MAKE SURE that you are covered in full should you be in a car accident or any other accident. (And not covered by your day to day savings which will be quickly depleted.)

I have so much disappointment in household and car insurance as well as medical aid. They are there to take your money and when you are stuck by an unforeseen event, they have 10 billion reasons they don't want to pay out.

I have burned my fingers with insurance and medical aid and as for medical aid, I will rethink this whole situation and when I'm ready, I will take out a hospital plan with another medical aid and the balance of the R2700 I spent with Discovery Health per month, I will put in a savings account which I will use as my day to day savings.

I was a member for almost 8 years with Discovery Health and this is the way they treat their members.
