Discovery Health - Horrible experience

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with the service I have received from Discovery Medical Aid regarding my medical treatment for a back issue that began in July of last year. The series of miscommunications, lack of clarity, and unexpected out-of-pocket expenses I have encountered have left me not only frustrated but deeply concerned about the value of my medical aid.

In July, I sought medical assistance for a back problem and was advised to consult a neurosurgeon. Upon contacting Discovery, I was informed that the only contracted neurosurgeon on the KeyCare plan was located in Herm****, approximately 100 km away from my residence. I was told by the Discovery agent that all I needed to do was book an appointment with the specialist. As a first-time patient seeing a specialist, I followed this advice, took a day off work, and drove two hours to the appointment.

While the neurosurgeon was professional and able to identify the problem area promptly, they recommended a CT scan and X-ray to confirm their suspicion. The appointment for these procedures was booked for August, and I was told that I would be contacted if there were any co-payments due for these tests.

However, after the consultation, I faced unexpected issues with Discovery's claims process. The initial rejection of my specialist consultation was extremely frustrating, as I had followed the instructions given to me by your team. After disputing this, Discovery acknowledged that the process had not been explained clearly to me and admitted that I should have been informed of the proper procedures from the outset. Ultimately, only R800 of the R1200 consultation was covered by Discovery.

When I arrived for my CT scan and X-ray in August, after once again taking a day off work and driving two hours to the facility, I was shocked to be told that I needed to make a co-payment of R10,200 for a bill of R15,816. I was not notified of this in advance, and the co-payment notification was sent to my spam folder. There was no attempt from Discovery or the hospital to contact me directly regarding this co-payment, leaving me in a difficult position when I arrived for the appointment. I verbally confirmed with the hospital that this was the only outstanding fee for the scans and was assured that no further payments would be required.

To my surprise, two months later, I received an email from the radiology department stating that Discovery had rejected part of the payment, and I now owed an additional R2,539. Discovery had only covered R3,076 of the original R15,816 bill. Given the significant monthly premium of over R2,000 that I am paying for the KeyCare Plus plan, I find this situation completely unacceptable. It raises serious questions about what I am paying for and why I am expected to bear such a large portion of medical costs despite having coverage.

The lack of clear communication, the unexpected and excessive co-payments, and the insufficient coverage for the services I’ve required have made this process extremely difficult and distressing. I am extremely unhappy with how this matter has been handled, and I expect a detailed explanation of the breakdown of payments and a resolution to the additional charges I am now facing.

I trust that Discovery Medical Aid will take this complaint seriously and work towards providing a more transparent and efficient service to ensure this does not happen again.

Sincerely,
