Discovery Health doesn't deliver

I had a foot operation that cost R35,000 excluding costs of one night stay in hospital. Of that Discovery paid just R7000. I have paid nearly R250,000 in premiums over 13 years and have never claimed. It was almost impossible to get an explanation but when I did I found there are no orthopedic surgeons registered in the scheme and that when Discovery says in their literature that they will cover 100% of surgeon's fee what they actually mean is that they will give 100% of the percentage that they actually allow for surgeons not registered with the scheme - which can be as low as 12% of the surgeon's full fee. This is word play to confuse and mislead at its finest and ought to be *******. Insurance policies should be written in plain language that don't require the services of a broker to interpret. There is actually a gap insurance industry that has sprung up to bridge the gap in these medical aid ****s. It's appalling. Needless to say, after many unsuccessful attempts to speak to a human being instead of stock email responses I have left the scheme. At least I've won back R24000 in premiums I haven't paid. Thank goodness I've remained healthy.
