Discovery health chronic illness benefit waiting period

I have an unresolved complaint with the chronic division. I had a break in cover with discovery from 2016 because I lost my job and couldn't afford medical cover. Now that my situation changed, my partner and I rejoined and I was surprised that I was given a 1 year waiting period for chronic. This means, I am being penalized for not being able to afford medical cover with them. I am very disappointed to find out that this is how they operate at discovery.
