Discovery Health
I have been a member of Discovery Health since 1997. From 1997 to end of 2014 I have been on the Classic Comprehensive plan. I have been advised that my monthly premium would increase from R7 437 to R8 178 - these payments are excluding my Vitality monthly payments. As I found the new payments exorbitant for only 3 members, myself, my husband and 14 year old son, I have decided to join the Classic Priority Plan at R5 669 per month. I was fully aware of the difference 1) self payment R8 000 2) above threshold advantage R19 200 instead of unlimited with the Classic Comprehensive plan 3) that there would be payments for certain hospital procedures. I have been informed by Discovery on Saturday 12/09/2015 that I am liable for the payment of R5 650 to the hospital prior to the minor operation (arthroscopy and infiltration). My question to this - why this R5 650 cannot be deducted from my above threshold advantage of R19 200?? Other than minor operations for myself, my husband nor my son has ever been for any operations.

Thank you for your comment.
As discussed, members who choose the Priority Series of plans are covered comprehensively at a much lower premium, compared to the Comprehensive Series of plans. The attractive contributions for the Priority plans are made possible by:
o Introducing deductibles for a defined list of in-hospital procedures.
o Certain limits on the Priority Plans are lower than the Comprehensive Plans
These deductibles cannot be claimed back from the Scheme as this amount is the members liability.
I do understand that you may not be satisfied with the outcome to your query however it is in line with the Scheme rules.
