Discovery DOES NOT cover EMERGENCIES!

Just a warning to any one on discovery plans, they claim to cover emergencies and they claim "If you have an emergency, you can go straight to hospital." This is NOT the case. During an emergency, for a life threatening condition for a pregnant woman, covered under the PMB, we were refused admission to the closest private hospital to our home as the hospital was not on the Discovery network. They claim to provide emergency care at any hospital even on Delta plans, they DO NOT. So please make sure whenever you are in a life threatening accident or similar that you do this close to a Delta network hospital, as you will not be allowed admission to a private hospital outside of their network, unless you are conscious and happen to have R6500 available to pay the hospital BEFORE admission. This is not the hospital, this is Discovery. Good luck to anyone who needs life saving treatment outside of their network, you will be send to a state hospital.

Hi BrokenLink2

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to respond.

Emergency admissions are allowed at any hospital regardless of the plan you are on. Discovery Health Medical Scheme(DHMS) would never require a deductible for a confirmed emergency admission. DHMS is regulated by the Council for Medical Scheme and acts in line with the regulations set out in the Medical Schemes Act. As per Regulation 7 of the Act, emergency medical condition is defined as - "the sudden and at the time, unexpected onset of a health condition that requires immediate medical or surgical treatment, where failure to provide medical or surgical treatment would result in serious impairment of bodily functions or serious dysfunction of a bodily organ or part, or would place the person's life in serious jeopardy". Members do not necessarily have to be admitted into hospital for their condition to qualify as a PMB. For example, members can be treated in casualty for very low blood sugar, an acute asthma attack or even a fracture.

I have discussed the additional information we require to assist further and eagerly await this.

Regards

Norman

Reviewer Update

No they are not. You are blatentaly lying. Fact is your clients will arive at hospital and be turned away. After various discussions with a Norman I still have no explanation as to why we were refused treatment. I shall continue posting my reviews every 5 days to make sure your clients are aware that they are being de*****ed by Discovery. Also I have requested cancellation forms 5 times this year, have still not received it.
