Despite doctors motivation

1.5 years ago I moved over to a diabetes drug, Victoza. This was due to my diabetes being inadequately controlled. Although my long term levels (Hb1AC) seemed ok, I suffered from spikes in blood sugar and also lows(due to the meds I took). Victoza gave me a new lease on life. I paid for this out of pocket. I app**** to for chronic cover last year and was refused. I app**** this year again having upped my plan to comprehensive. Discovery refused . Their reason was I did not meet the requirements without specifying the requirements. Previously the reason given was that in their opinion there were other meds. that was more suitable. My doctor disagrees...so do I. The only conclusion is that they refuse due to to the cost. This is short sighted as my risk of complications decrease significantly with tighter diabetes control and so will their long term cost if my diabetes is managed properly. I also have to assume they don't take all factors into consideration as my doctor has done. Stopping this drug effectively robs me of the chance at controlling my diabetes and leading a relatively normal life. I am still trying to get them to see my point of view - this is a challenge

Hello ajays,

Thank you for your comment.

As discussed, the Victroza was not approved as it may only be funded when used as an add on to a three drug regimen. I have contacted the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology (CDE) who have advised that you may apply for the Victroza to be funded as part of the Diabetes program once you have enrolled. The Diabetes program offers you access to medicines, consultations and tests in order to assist you in managing your diabetes. They may be contacted on ***.

I hope that my discussion provides you with clarity on the concerns that you have raised. Should there be any further queries that you may require assistance on, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

Regards

Megan
