Despicable Business Practices

As the main member of a Discovery Classic Comprehensive Scheme I asked that my husband be removed as a dependent as of February 28, 2017 as I was no longer financially able to pay his monthly premium of approximately R4,500 as I live on a fixed monthly income. Nofification was received by Discovery on February 13, 2017. On February 08, 2017 my savings account balance was R21,677.29. By February 14 it had been reduced to 10,039.87 - before my husband had even ceased to be a dependent. On February 24 I received a Certificate of Membership stating that I had a pro rata savings account of R18,083 and a balance of R15,644.

The current balance is R7,111.83. In the months of January and February I accrued R1,673.12 towards savings account! This compares with my husband's expenditure of R5,731.01 all debited to me! My spend is for chronic medication NOT covered by Discovery!!!! My husband is now a member of the Classic Comprehensive Plan in his own right.

Why, therefore must I bear the cost of his expenditure? I did not choose to see a psychiatrist not on the Discovery panel! But I am being penalised because of the rules! How many similar cases happen each year???

The problem will be exacerbated when my savings account is replete. I cannot afford to pay a monthly premium of some R4,500 plus about R1,800 for chronic medication NOT covered by Discovery despite numerous appeals by two specialists over periods of 21 and 16 years respectively. The price of medication increased in March. Last year I twice had gastrointestinal surgery for a 'non-chronic' condition: Barretts Oesophagus!!! The hypercholesterolaemia drug I currently take... INERGY reduced levels from about 6.3 on Aspavor to 3.8. Significant as I have already had 3 MI's. Apart from anything else, while on Aspavor I lost 30 kg in weight and had permanent diahorrea!! On appeal I was told to take Aspavor and sent literature on how effective it is!

I was told by a call centre agent this afternoon to downgrade my scheme! NOT a solution. I am not exactly a village idiot so researched and rejected alternative schemes.

I have contacted Discovery to no avail... Rules must be adhered to!!!
