********* Conduct by Discovery
<div>I’m raising a serious concern about how Discovery has handled my life cover application and how they continue to retain and share inaccurate medical information about me, which now has long-term implications for my ability to get fair insurance.
In 2023, I approached my doctor about temporary work-related stress and requested something to help me cope. She prescribed Urbanol. There was no diagnosis of anxiety, depression or any psychiatric disorder. I only took a few tablets from one script (out of six repeats. This was a short-term, self-managed, non-clinical event.
When applying for life cover, I voluntarily disclosed this information to Discovery. Their underwriting team never contacted my doctor to verify the clinical context which I believe should be standard procedure, especially for decisions that affect long-term insurability. Instead, they unilaterally app**** an exclusion for all mental health-related disability claims, without clinical confirmation or evidence of a condition.
As a result, I declined Discovery’s quotation and app**** to Sanlam for cover. During their due diligence, Discovery disclosed this unverified information. I was not informed or asked for consent for this disclosure, and I believe this may be a violation of my privacy rights under POPIA.
My key concerns are as follows:
1. Discovery has made and is retaining unverified, inaccurate medical assumptions about me in its records. 2. They shared this information with a third party (Sanlam) without my knowledge or consent. 3. Their decision was made without consulting my doctor, despite having full access to my details and permission. 4. If left unchallenged, Discovery will continue to share a distorted version of my medical history, which could limit my future access to fair, unbiased life cover.
This entire experience has left me feeling punished for being honest. I sought help responsibly during a difficult time — yet I’m being penalised as though I had a diagnosed mental illness, which is simply not true.
I need Discovery to: 1. Correct the inaccurate medical profile they have created 2. Cease sharing unverified information unless it is supported by actual medical diagnosis 3. Review their underwriting approach to ensure it does not discourage people from being transparent or seeking help
As a customer, I expect ethical treatment and respect for my privacy. I also expect that health insurers verify facts before making decisions that follow people for life.</div>
