Chronic service from chronic department

I am a diabetic on insulin. Each month I require six pens (vials) of Apidra, but when I tried to order today I was told that I cannot order until end of September as I have ordered more than twelve times during the last year. My other option is to pay for the medication myself, which, as a pensioner I cannot afford (that is why I have medical aid). This probably came about as I increased the number of pens from 5 to 6 when I found that I was not making it to the end of the month.

In any case, it is irrelevant as I am taking the amount of insulin that I need to maintain my blood sugar level. I am not wasting it or throwing it away. If Discovery wants me to remain healthy it is their duty to supply me with the necessary chronic medication. By not taking insulin for two months my health will suffer, hospitilisation may be necessary (which will certainly cost more than a few vials of insulin), and it could hasten my death.

The call centre consultants are unable to assist me, and to get anybody to urgently contact me is all but impossible. I am told that they do not make outbound calls. Unbelievable!

The matter has been resolved (it was a "mis-understanding" on their part) and Discovery are going to cover the cost of the medication. My only question is what would have happened if I had not persisted and just coughed up?
