Being bedridden isn't life-threatening

I am absolutely shocked and disappointed.

I took my boyfriend to the Chiropractor because he hurt his back. The Chiropractor took an X-ray and advised that we should go straight to the hospital, because it seems as though my boyfriend has a tear in one of the discs in his spine.

We phoned Discovery to find out which hospitals we could go to according to our Essential Smart Plan. I then took him to one of the mentioned hospitals' emergency departments and the doctor and the neurologist there examined him and agreed with the Chiropractor - he needs to be admitted. I would just like to add that my boyfriend cannot walk, sit or lay down properly because of this injury. He loses sensation in his legs and his feet go blue when he stands for too long.

So Discovery approved his admittance into the hospital. The following morning the doctors requested approval for an MRI, because the MRI will then tell us exactly what the problem is because at that time we were all just assuming it was a tear in his disc (which is still very serious). Discovery then disapproved the MRI (due to the fact that it's his back and it's not life threatening?) and they revoked their initial approval of him being admitted in the first place.

So someone from the accounts department at the hospital went up to my boyfriend's room and advised him that he either needs to pay for the MRI and any other treatment further, or he needs to go home - and pay for the treatment he received from when he was admitted, since Discovery decided to change their minds.

So we had no choice as to pay the account and take him home. So he's basically bedridden and popping pain pills until Discovery decides his condition is serious? What are we suppose to do?
