DialDirect increase premium without agreement ... and OSTI helps them.
Like many others I've been ****** by DialDirect ... and after complaining to the Office of the Short-Term Insurance Ombudsman (OSTI), it seems the Ombudsman is as *********** as DialDirect is dishonest. I noticed on my bank statement that my Dial Direct car insurance premium was a lot more than it should be. When I complained, DialDirect claimed my policy had been 'reviewed' and increased ... without my knowledge, OR AGREEMENT! When I asked how they could do that, 'Bradley' told me I had 'agreed to receive correspondence by email'. SO? .... that does not mean I agreed to the increase! If I didn't explicitly agree to the increase, why didn't DialDirect just cancel the policy? DialDirect charged me R171.63 MORE than I authorised, for 7 months before I cancelled the policy; which is a total of R1201.41. I also noticed that for some months before July, they were already charging me more than agreed – Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec (2017), Jan, Feb, March (2018) R748.50 (R100.32), April, May and June R754.95 (R56.97), so even before the ‘increase’ they were already *****ing money! I then demanded that DialDirect immediately refund the total of all the additional charges to my account and I advised that if I did not receive this refund by 15 January 2019, I would lodge a complaint with the Ombudsman. I demanded a refund of the charges, totalling R1358.70, but of course DialDirect did not even respond. I cancelled the policy and complained to the OSTI. I eventually found the email DialDirect sent me in my junk mail. The subject title did not indicate that the letter related to an increased premium. The letter was addressed to my postal address, yet sent by email. And the increase was 'hidden' at the bottom of the first page, in the middle of a whole lot of other information. According to Lora Bezri (Assitant Ombudsman): I was "informed that the additional amount is for notifications and correspondence via email that he agreed to". ******* - that means DialDirect can send me any ******* they want and I must pay for it? I "looked at my email and noticed that one of the email policy renewal schedules addressed the premium increase". ******* - I never got any 'policy renewal' and the notice of the increase was HIDDEN. In any case, I DID NOT agree to any increase. "The insurer is entitled to make changes to the policy by giving the insured a 30 days’ notice". Yes, so? That does not mean I have to agree to it. " .... the premium increased to R920.00. But, the insurer only deducted R907.00". ******* - the insurer probably does this deliberately to confuse the issue and make themselves look generous, when in fact they are *****ing. It's very obvious to me the Ombudsman did not look at the details of my complaint, or is to stupid to understand the issues; or maybe they have so many complaints to deal with, they cannot give them proper attention ... After I complained to the OSTI, a customer service consultant agreed (in writing) to refund the increases in the premium, but of course they didn't really - DialDirect lie. When the OSTI sent me their decision, they included information that DialDirect had sent them, but which I had NEVER seen before. And the policy schedule was not updated - it was the old schedule for two vehicles! Zuleckha Cara or DialDirect also told the OSTI a lot of ******* about the reasons for increasing the premium, EVEN if there were no claims .... and insists I was notified. Even if I was notified, I DID NOT AGREE! And after I cancelled the policy, I got a new one (with same cover) for only R510/month; so how can DialDirect justify charging me 30% more? The truth is that the amount they charge has no objective value. They just charge as much as they can get away with ... and that's all there is to it. They make up excuses for 'reviews' and create ways of tricking customers! And the OSTI are helping them do it.
