Unacceptably bad service from DHL and customs

I used DHL to courier a shipment for me from Hong Kong to South Africa. It arrived in Johannesburg on 16 November 2015 and was stopped by customs for inspection. It is now 3 December, 18 days later, and I have still not received my parcel. This is with COURIERS that I paid almost R1000 for speedy delivery. I am sending emails almost every day to the DHL person responsible for my package but I only ever get replies half of the time, a few days later, if I'm lucky. I paid another fortune over to them in form of required duties and import tax on the day of receiving the invoice from DHL, this was now a week ago. DHL blames customs for keeping the parcel but they have no idea of what the status is or when it will get released, which is ridiculous from a large international courier company - don't you have any working relations with customs??? In my opinion this is not my problem to resolve, it is DHL's issue to attend to since I paid a lot of money for it not to be my problem but it seems they don't really care since they have already been paid. Terrible situation, my hands are cut off. Going on the recent complaints mine is not the only parcel. Waybill: ***

Hello roan_m,

DHL Express enjoys excellent relations with Customs and other related Authorities worldwide and we seldom encounter difficulties. We are unable to intercede with their procedures and regulations, as they are Government controlled entities and we have to abide to their rules and regulations.

Our Industry is currently experiencing an increased volume in Stopped and Detained shipments, by Customs.
Due to the festive period, Customs has advised that there is a higher risk of contraband and false declarations being made. As a result Customs has been mandated to increase physically inspection to minimize the risk to the country.

We are looking into your case, Please kindly refer to the email provided above for further communication.

Important to note:
Customs South Africa is a Division of SARS - South African Revenue Services and may therefore conduct Audits on any person importing/exporting goods
