DHL in South Africa uses estimated values to calculate duties and VAT, then attempts to shift the blame onto SARS, even though they are the ones generating the invoices. They use a SARS website that estimates the exchange rates and it never updates to the current exchange rate. As a result of this, customers pay more than they should. When I noticed that the price of my goods was incorrect on the invoice, I contacted them, and they assured me I would receive the correct invoice the next day with the current exchange rate as the one I had was just an estimate. However, this never happened. Instead, I ended up going back and forth with them, trying to get them to properly calculate the VAT and duties, as their figures were inflated for their own benefit. I doubt that they pay that full amount to SARS yet they want to use a website that estimated an exchange rate and doesn’t have the correct exchange rates to charge customers. I received various calculations and totals, which clearly indicates a significant issue with how they calculate these charges. Some of their employees confirmed that the exchange rate on my invoice was incorrect but never got back to me with the correct one. I hope this is investigated, but I will certainly avoid using their services in the future and will request my suppliers to ship with an alternative carrier. I hope that suppliers will also look into using other services when shipping to South Africa and avoid DHL.
