DO NOT GET CAUGHT OUT LIKE I WAS!!! I used DHL Express to send a parcel of some baby clothing to a friend in Finland who had just given birth to a little boy. I tracked the parcel and saw it was held up in clearance in Tampere Finland. I informed my friend who called DHL Finland and was told the cellphone number provided for her was incorrect, therefore the parcel was being returned to SA but that they (DHL Finland) would try stop this. It wasn't stopped and I received an SMS to say I needed to pay R790 odd to have the package returned to me. I didn't believe the cellphone number story as all details were correct on the waybill and surely a cellphone number is not as important as the address... I inquired at DHL SA why the parcel was returned and was told it was because my Finnish friend's ID was needed and I didn't supply it originally. Now here is my issue, why are there conflicting reasons on why the parcel couldn't be delivered AND why was I not asked for my friend's ID when posting?? Or even when the parcel was held up in Finland for 3+ days, why was I or my friend not contacted for the ID?? I mean, naturally I wouldn't have my friend's ID copy just laying around but I could get it if it indeed was required. Instead the parcel was returned to SA and now I must pay again if I want the parcel back... I have never heard of the receivers ID being needed as is it not a privacy risk if someone else is in possession of your ID document?? I have used DHL before with their ever changing rules and documentation requirements BUT I am always told what documents are needed before posting. When posting to the UK they wont even accept my parcels without the correct documentation, so why was this different? I just want to warn people posting to Finland especially. I am already R1000 out of pocket for the posting and if I choose to get the parcel it will be another R790+, not to mention the cost of the gift. I am very dissatisfied at the service, communication and the nonchalant response I got to why the parcel was returned. Thanks but no thanks...
